Oh What A Knight and The Chair Catastrophe

It was the year two thousand and two or so and I had just met this guy who was about five foot eleven and heavier set. I enjoyed playing volleyball at a church Monday nights, that’s where I met this fellow. I drove my little Kitty Tin Can on Wheels over to the church just to discover I had forgotten an elastic to tie my long flowing hair back with so I could play eye hair-free, the only thing I could find was a blue bandana. I entered the gym, stood on the sidelines thinking last time I was here was 7 years ago now and nope I don’t recognize anyone her…then my thoughts were interrupted by a oddly friendly slash flirty man’s voice "Hi, would you like to play?" I looked down at my "knee pads" thinking "well ya, I’m not wearing these things for nothing!" But I just said, "ya". So the man said, "well you can play here beside me on my team if you like." I thought "ok" and said "sure". I LOVED setting again! I would set him up and he’d spike that ball down at the Opponents. It WAS love at first spike…for him, for me? now it wasn’t quite yet. A couple weeks went by, (I was playing hard to get. I waited till I called him. He gave me his phone number on one of his business cards the first night we met so he could "help us with our computer". I knew his intentions! So I waited.) After those couple weeks I invited my Mom to come and play volleyball. She came but not only to play but to of course see this "guy" who I said "I think likes me, but I’m not sure…come check him out!" So she did. After playing, going out afterward for cheap chicken wings and fellowship, my MOM asked HIM to come over to HER HOUSE, in which I was living. He said "sure"! She asked him to drive her van while she wanted to come with me (I guess she wanted to see if he could really drive and how responsible he was, because he didn’t have his own running car at the time.) He agreed to drive it on one condition, she be in it with him? She agreed. He could not adjust the seat and my Mom is short, like me. So there he was I can still see it…so funny it was. Basically, he drove with the steering wheel between his legs. Haha…he was so uncomfortable, my Mom was really good at being the Mother and Father to me!!! Anyhow, we got back to my Mom’s, or our place, just to discover my Mom setting us up, I guess she approved hey? She said, "ok I’m going to bed, goodnight, have a good time talking, and please come pray with me before I go to sleep." I was so embarrassed but I tried not to think that way and thought of only the positives so I thought "any man of mine better love me for who I am" And I am fine with this! I mean it’s good to pray before bed!!! So there we were knelt down beside my Mom’s bed praying with her, then I shut her light off and closed the door. We proceeded to go to the living room to talk…it got late, then I drove him home, came home and went to bed. A couple weeks later, he asked me to be his girlfriend and he came over again (so yes I said yes) to talk in the living room while my Mom slept…it got late, again, but this time however, I did not drive him home right away, he fell asleep on the skinny couch and I fell asleep on the reclining chair. Ok now this wasn’t just ANY reclining chair, THIS was the SUPER DELUXE RECLINING CHAIR meaning when reclined it was VERY flat like a bed, BUT in order to recline it you had to rock yourself back in forth…anyway while Jeff slept right there on the couch next to me I was "adjusting" this chair. Well I over adjusted it. Let me set the mood here: The chair was in the corner. I over-adjusted the chair so much so that it including me completly flipped upside-down, my head on the ground in the corner with the chair on top of me!!! I could not move, I was stuck, UPSIDE-DOWN!!! I had "fallen and couldn’t get back up", so I did the only thing I could "JEFF, HELP? PLEASE HELP!" He woke up, and pulled the chair up off of me. What an awesome KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOUR HE WAS AND STILL IS!!! A couple years later, I accepted the challenge and excitement he offered, to be apart of his life forever and in 2004 we were married!!!

What a wonderful love story. I think it is so wonderful that you met doing something you both enjoyed. So many couples really have nothing in common. Your mom sounds like she is a really smart lady. Any one who would be willing to drive her van and then pray with her before bed sounds like a keeper. . . .which is a good thing, since you already decided to keep him.

Hi Demara, if Jeff had had any hesitancy about how you felt about him ….he could have taken advantage of your being held captive by the chair and left you there until you said ‘yes’ -ha-ha!
