Vanity
My friend Julie W asked an important question on one of my previous posts. She asked:
I personally have been wondering about the line between doing what is right for your body (ie the temple) and vanity. Any thoughts on this?
First of all, I wanted to see how the dictionary defined this word before I proceeded to answer this awesome question. And , what does dictionary.com define the word "Vanity" as meaning?
1. excessive pride in one’s appearance, qualities, abilities, achievements, etc.; character or quality of being vain; conceit: Failure to be elected was a great blow to his vanity. 2. an instance or display of this quality or feeling. 3. something about which one is vain. 4. lack of real value; hollowness; worthlessness: the vanity of a selfish life. 5. something worthless, trivial, or pointless.
And here’s my answer:
vanity? vs, the right thing?
hmmm…I think vanity is worthless or pointless. in other words…if it’s important that someone meet a certain goal because of health risks and achieves this goal and becomes healthy-I think they should use it to motivate others. However, if they meet this goal and flaunt it-show it off- with no intentions of helping others their weightloss was selfish and therefore pointless. Because what would be the point of their weightloss if only to flaunt it? I think a vane person flaunting their accomplishments is EXACTLY the same as spitting in someone’s face! It’s unnecessary really.
Now what about you, my reader, what is YOUR view on this?
